Peugeot 205 / 405 T16 : Pikes Peak, Colorado
Peugeot appeared for the first time with specially prepared rear engined 205 Turbo 16s, driven by ’87 Paris-Dakar winner Ari Vatanen, five time Safari rally winner Shekhar Mehta and Italian rallyist Andrea Zanussi. Although the Peugeot was fastest in practice, the event went toWalter Rohrl, who took a heavily winged Audi S1 Quattro Sport to the top, beating Ari by 15 seconds.
In 1988, Peugeot triumphed with Ari Vatanen winning the event in a 205 T16 and setting a record time of 10:47.22, which still stands today. The last time the event saw the awesome Group B rally cars. This is the basis of the Peugeot TV ad (which also features the excellent sound of Vince Jones singing "I’ve got you under my skin").
In 1989 Bobby Unser, born in Colorado Springs, set the unlimited record in a 600bhp, 1905cc, 880kg Peugeot 405 Turbo . He drove in 18 hill climbs and set 13 records. Bobby drove for the first time at age 21 and continued on through the mid-1990s.
600PS, 1905cc, 880kg - wow!
So viel zu dem...
